Smell The Flowers (#124)
Hello,
I hope you had a good week!
Sorry for the delayed note. It's gotten a bit too busy.
This note is going to probably sound a bit negative.
Many of us grew up learning simple values - be helpful, think of others, share freely. Yet life shows us these principles aren't as straightforward as they seem.
Take the corporate world, for instance. We often hesitate to share potentially valuable ideas widely, weighing personal risks (e.g. idea getting copied or someone else getting the credit) against broader benefits. While these ideas could help customers or stakeholders, professional realities demand a more nuanced approach.
This makes us realize that maxims like "honesty is the best policy" or "don't be selfish" oversimplify our complex world. While we aspire to always "do the right thing," real situations often present competing "right" choices. We naturally prioritize ourselves and our loved ones - and perhaps that's not entirely wrong.
Maybe the goal isn't perfect altruism, but finding our balanced position on the spectrum - one that aligns with our values while acknowledging real-world complexities. We each define our ethical boundaries and must be at peace with where we draw those lines.
Hope your week is going great. Have a wonderful rest of the week!
